Findings of the gameplay visualisation research project.

During the gameplay visualisation research project we developed a data model to capture player's action in MMOGs and designed a front-end GUI and set of visualisations for designers to view the player usage patterns. Although we designed a system that works optimally for large developers that handle complex MMOGs, I now practice what I learnt during my time on the project in my everyday design work at Halfbrick. In particular, I developed a new model for playtesting whereby a playtester watches the video of their own playtest immediately afterwards and gives a commentary of what they were doing. This has proven to gather unexpectedly succesful results from playtesters.

Another outcome of the project, albeit rather lo-fi, is that I was inspired to print out and scribble notes on the birds-eye-view of level maps when playtesting to help make taking notes easier. This idea came largely due to my appreciation of visualisation thanks to this project.
